By 2004, Proyecto Aldea Global joined with 300 producers in the Municipality of La Libertad, Comayagua to implement a "coffee diversification program" aimed to reduce their dependency on coffee and diversify their farm crops.
PAG approached the problem with an integrated strategy, focusing on coffee diversification, environment and watershed protection, nutrition and health programming complemented with education and civil society empowerment. The program succeeded in diversifying 500 small farmers with vegetables, fruits, banana trees, fish, hen farms, etc. Later farmers were organized, trained and formed the "Sembrando Esperanza Cooperative" with 165 active members. PAG built a new municipal regional market center building in La Libertad, which is now administrated by them. This new farmers’ association with their new market facility now face the great challenge: how to compete and how to market their products efficiently and create employment for local communities and local families.
In order to face this challenge Proyecto Aldea Global proposed a 36- month program called WORKING FOR A BETTER FUTURE having four interventions: (1) Increasing farmer’s production capacity. (2) Diversify the farmer’s production competitiveness in the regional market; (3) Increasing the marketing capacity of the organization 4) Employing many thousands of persons each year in all the different stages of agro production activities. These workers will be coming from the La Libertad Region, i.e. Ojos de Agua, Las Lajas and La Libertad municipalities. The change in the families and the regional economy will boost local development and change forever the lives of these rural poor farmers who at the moment, are excluded from the profitable markets. This project was accepted by the Argidius Foundation and was begun in July of 2008.
