Fighting against Domestic Violence for the cause of Women and Children

For many years, domestic violence (DV) in Honduras has been increasing and has become a serious obstacle to women in the home, their participation in the labor market and in community development. In 2001, Proyecto Aldea Global joined together four local municipal governments to address this problem. To date, PAG has opened seven domestic violence offices staffed by community women with offices located inside each local municipal building. The program was named Deborah, after one of the Jewish counselors mentioned in the Bible.

The Deborah program’s main objectives are:

(A) To build capacity among women groups and civil society.

(B) To respond "opportunely and effectively" to domestic violence victims.

(C) To prevent domestic violence from happening.

The program's main activities include:

(1) Family rights trainings

(2) Counseling DV victims

(3) Conflict mediation for couples

(4) Legal guidance in cases such as divorce, property, child custody and child support.

*The Deborah Program sees an average of 1,900 DV cases per year in its regional offices.

2011 Achievements:

  • 277 domestic violence cases were attended by the 27 civil society organizations in guidance, counseling and communication.
  • 220 domestic violence cases were attended by the 5 Municipal  women’s offices.
  • 848 women began their counseling process in the paralegal offices.
  • 3,835 people (new DV cases) presented their cases in the paralegal offices.
  • 206 men completed their counseling with the program and received a course on masculinity.
  • 110 women were trained in vocational workshops on beauty, piñata making, baking and more in order to start their own micro businesses.
  • 95 women are currently generating an income for their families through a permanent business with help from the Deborah program.

DIAKONOS PROGRAM
Training for pastors on effective communication in the church

Throughout Proyecto Aldea Global’s target region, Catholic and Protestant Christian churches have little to no involvement in social or development activities.

Since 2004, Proyecto Aldea Global has implemented a program called DIAKONOS to increase the capacity of local Christian Organizations (COs) to reach out into their communities by implementing community development and linking it to spiritual growth. The DIAKONOS program works in the municipalities of Siguatepeque, Santa Cruz de Yojoa and Taulabé.

The program’s main goals are:

A) To strengthen COs administrative, monitoring and evaluation capacity.

B) To strengthen COs fundraising capacities.

C) To establish strategic alliances between PAG and COs to implement activities related to community development, HIV education and social aid.

2010 - 2011 Achievements:

(1) "Building Bridges of Peace" event held on February 23rd, 2011 with World Vision, Micah Network, Biblical Union, ASJ, PAG and CONSEDE in Siguatepeque. (An event focused on the collaboration between churches of different doctrines to work together for the good of the same cause).
(2) Three trainings were given to the Association of Pastors on effective communication in churches.
(3) Two trainings on Strategic Planning took place in Taulabé and Santa Cruz with 80 pastors and church leaders in attendance.
(4) Four trainings on Advocacy and Impact with 145 pastors and church leaders in attendance.
(5) Two trainings on Strategic Alliance with 80 pastors and church leaders in attendance.
