Small
animals programs started in 2001, to provide an alternative
income to families living in the PANACAM (Cerro Azul National
Park) and inside the coffee growing regions in La Libertad,
Ojos de Agua and Lajas. The program aims to provide resources,
capacity and opportunities to 150 women and their young
children.
The project strategy started by training women and their
teenagers to take care of the small animals, then planting
the animal’s food, building the breeding facilities
using local materials and finally, marketing their products.
The animals are not a gift, so once the beneficiary family
has reproduced their animals, the new breed must be returned
to Proyecto Aldea Global to be passed to another family
in need. This is called “chain passing”.
